I fell in love with Prince when I heard the album Purple Rain, and of course, watched the film. Before Prince, it was Michael Jackson, and whilst I continued to love his music, there could only be one, and that was/is Prince.
My best friend Cheryl and I used to listen to Prince’s music all the time. We talked about Prince all the time, and we become resourceful (we didn’t have any money) in obtaining his previous albums to fully immerse ourselves in his musical journey and learn as much about him as we could. We were teenagers who felt like we had discovered the best thing since sliced bread.
This was also the time that my obsession with the colour purple was born. Everyone thought it would just be a phase and that I would grow out of it. Many, many years later – this has not happened, nor has it diminished.
I’m sure if Cheryl was still alive today, that she would feel exactly the same.
When I play a particular Prince track or album, it conjures up memories of what I was doing and feeling back in the day. Purple Rain, Parade and Around the World in a Day represent some of the best and worst times of my life.
Sometimes it Snows in April – is about Cheryl. Always will be. I still miss my best friend.
